If you or your child engage in sports or sports-related activities, you are more likely to suffer from damage to your teeth. Nearly one-third of dental emergencies are a direct result of a sports-related injury, according to the ADA. Resolve to protect your teeth by wearing a custom-made sports guard by your Nashville dentists at Devine Dentistry.

Dental emergencies caused by sports-related injuries may include:

  • Avulsed tooth (tooth that is knocked out)
  • Lacerations of the lips, cheeks or other soft tissue inside the mouth
  • Damage to existing dental work
  • Broken, chipped, or fractured teeth

Not to mention, these accidents equate to time and money, neither of which you probably care to waste.

How does a sports guard work?

A sports guard is custom-made so that it fits snugly over your teeth. They are usually made of clear acrylic so that they are not as noticeable. When worn, the sports guard absorbs the brunt of the impact by redistributing the force that would otherwise cause injury to your mouth, lips, cheeks, or even neurological injuries.

Who should get a sports guard?

Anyone engaging in contact sports such as football, basketball, hockey, wrestling, or even baseball, gymnastics, mountain biking or any sport in which you could injure your mouth, could benefit from a sports guard. Whether you get hit in the face by another player or a piece of sporting equipment, a sports guard can protect you from getting a tooth knocked out, receiving a laceration to your cheek, tongue, or lips, and even prevent your teeth from being broken. All of these injuries result in time away from work or school, and of course, cost more money in repairs than it does to simply prevent that damage in the first place.

The Process

Getting a sports guard is simple. You visit us at our Nashville dental office in which we take impressions of your mouth and bite. These are used to fabricate a custom-made sports guard that fits over your teeth specifically. It may take a couple of weeks for our dental laboratory to fabricate your sports guard, but when you return to our office to pick it up, we will try it in to make sure it fits perfectly.

Caring for your Sports Guard

Caring for your sports guard is simple, and it should last you for a while if you take care of it:

  • Always rinse your sports guard after wearing it
  • Gently clean it using warm (not hot) water and mild soap
  • Avoid using harsh cleaners or abrasive brushes to clean it
  • Ensure that it is dry before storing it for your next use
  • Store your sports guard in the container that we provide you
  • Never share your sports guard with others
  • Bring it with you to each checkup so that we can ensure that it remains intact and performing well

If your sports guard becomes lost or broken, please come back to see us for a new one.
