Do your teeth appear to be too short? Do you have a “gummy” smile or other aesthetic issues that make the tissues of your gums appear poorly proportioned? The Nashville cosmetic dentists at Devine Dentistry can help improve appearance in these cases by performing a smile lift. Also known as a cosmetic crown lengthening, this is a procedure that re-shapes the supporting bone and tissue. The result is a more even gum line and a well-proportioned, better-looking smile.
Am I a good candidate for a smile lift?
Take a good look at your smile in the mirror. Do you notice a large quantity of gum tissue above your top teeth? Do your front teeth appear short and square? If the answer to either of these questions is yes, then a smile lift could be right for you.
A smile lift often is performed as a precursor to other, desired cosmetic dental procedures that are not possible because there is not enough of the existing tooth structure visible to support the treatment. A smile lift, once complete, extends an existing tooth so that restorations such as crowns can be placed.
Before beginning work on a smile lift or any other cosmetic dental procedure, your Nashville cosmetic dentist will perform a thorough examination of your oral health to make sure there are no pre-existing conditions that will complicate or conflict with the treatment. If you suffer from gum disease, the gum disease likely will need to be treated first before a smile lift can be performed. This ensures your oral health remains optimal, which helps prolong your cosmetic dentistry results.
What can I expect with a smile lift?
After your teeth receive a professional cleaning from one of our capable and courteous dental hygienists, a local anesthetic is applied. From there, one of our Nashville cosmetic dentists removes the extraneous gum tissue, exposing more of the tooth structure and evening out your smile.
We may recommend the installation of veneers or crowns to further enhance the appearance of your front teeth.
After a smile lift
After a smile lift is completed, you may encounter mild to moderate facial swelling. If so, you will be recommended to place an ice pack on the area in 20-minute intervals until the swelling subsides. Discomfort often is minimal and can be managed through the use of over-the-counter pain relief medicine such as Ibuprofen. We also typically recommend the use of an oral hygiene rinse at least twice a day until your follow-up appointment, and to eat a diet of soft foods for at least a week following the completion of your smile lift. We prefer to schedule the follow-up one to two weeks following the smile lift. After healing is complete, you can resume your normal routine of eating, drinking, and oral hygiene.
