IV Sedation

iv sedationServing Brentwood, Belle Meade and Green Hills Areas of Nashville TN

As part of our commitment to providing comfortable care for our patients, Devine Dentistry offers sedation dentistry to patients in the Nashville area. While we also offer nitrous oxide as means of relaxing patients for their procedure, sometimes a more powerful form of sedation is needed. For these instances, Nashville’s sedation dentist at Devine Dentistry now offers IV, or intravenous sedation, as a treatment option.

What is IV sedation and how does it differ from nitrous oxide?

IV sedation is delivered by injection. Once it takes effect, the patient feels a deep state of relaxation. A patient who receives IV sedation will not feel any discomfort during the procedure; in fact, in most cases, patients who undergo IV sedation remember nothing at all about the procedure. Just like sedation via nitrous oxide, however, you will not lose total consciousness. Instead, you will remain awake throughout your procedure, and able to communicate with your oral health care team.

Benefits of IV Sedation

  • Fast-acting: IV sedation goes to work very quickly because the sedative is injected directly into the bloodstream.
  • Controllable: Unlike other methods of sedation, IV sedation can be adjusted to different levels while a patient experiences its effects.
  • Relaxing: IV sedation can help you feel completely relaxed and stress-free while receiving the dental care that you need.

Preparing for an IV sedation procedure

Patients who plan to receive sedation intravenously prior to a dental procedure need to plan accordingly for their appointment, as compared to if they were receiving sedation by nitrous oxide.

Your local Nashville sedation dentist at Devine Dentistry offers these preparation tips:

  • Arrange travel to and from our office. The effects of IV sedation can last as long as six hours.
  • Do not eat or drink anything, water included, for a minimum of eight hours prior to your appointment.
  • Abstain from drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment.

Can I benefit from sedation dentistry?

Devine Dentistry offers sedation dentistry to provide comfort to those individuals who suffer from dental phobia, a condition that occurs when people feel high anxiety, fear, or even outright terror over going to the dentist. In fact, millions of people in the United States—possibly as many as 30 to 40 million individuals, are afflicted with dental phobia, and you could be one of them. Ironically, many of these people are in the greatest need for professional oral health care because they have neglected their teeth and avoided the dentist due to their feelings of anxiety or fear.

No decision involving sedation should be made lightly, and not every dentist is qualified to perform sedation dentistry. The dentists at Devine Dentistry are proud to have the special training, certifications, and qualifications to perform IV sedation dentistry.
