Serving Brentwood, Belle Meade and Green Hills Areas of Nashville TN
Help reduce your child’s risk of cavities by opting for sealants. Your Nashville family dentist at Devine Dentistry offers sealants, which adds an additional barrier against tooth decay and cavities.
What are sealants?
Sealants are a plastic coating that is applied to the chewing surface of the bottom back teeth, specifically the molars and pre-molars. These areas of the teeth have deep grooves and pits, which are difficult to keep clean. Plus, these are perfect areas for decay-causing bacteria to lurk. By filling in these areas with a sealant, your child’s risk of tooth decay in these specific areas is lessened.
Are sealants safe?
This is a common question that we get from parents, and certainly, an important one to ask. The sealant material used at Devine Dentistry is made of non-toxic material and has been deemed safe by the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Are sealants the best choice for my child?
Sealants are generally recommended for children as their permanent back teeth begin to emerge. This way, we can add the barrier of protection to your child’s teeth before they really have a chance to be subjected to harmful bacteria. Sealants are ideal for most all children around this age, and sometimes even adults can benefit from them as well, although dental insurance typically only covers the cost of sealants if being applied to a patient under the age of 18. Sealants are especially ideal for children who may not be able to brush their teeth well on their own. During your child’s evaluation with the dentist, we will decide if sealants are the best option.
How long do sealants last?
The longevity of a sealant will vary case by case. However, in general sealants last between 3-5 years, although some patients report having their sealants well into adulthood. If your child’s sealants fall out, we can always reapply them in our Nashville dental office. You can prolong the life of your child’s sealants by having him, or her avoid eating chewing candies or foods, as well as chewing on hard objects such as hard candies or ice.
Sealants should never be used in place of routine oral hygiene or dental visits. Every child should still brush his or her teeth twice daily, and floss every day. Eating a diet that is low in sugar and high in fresh fruits in vegetables will also help improve your child’s oral health. Remember to also bring your child in for dental cleanings and checkups once every six months, or as recommended by your dentist.
At Devine Dentistry, we believe that oral health is a lifetime commitment that starts at an early age. It is important to model healthy oral hygiene habits for your child and encourage regular oral health routines. Take the step to protecting your child’s teeth from tooth decay by asking us about dental sealants in Nashville.
