Here at Devine Dentistry, we love dentistry, and we love serving you! We are all about delivering a dental experience that is focused on meeting your needs in every aspect of your care.

When is a root canal needed?

A root canal is necessary when the pulp, which is the soft tissues inside the tooth’s root canal, becomes infected. This can be incredibly painful since the root is connected to a nerve. No matter how nervous a root canal makes you, waiting until it is too late can be the worst mistake. Ignoring an infection in your mouth could be dangerous to your health, as it could spread to your heart or your brain.

What causes the inflammation or infection?

There are a variety of reasons that can cause infection or inflammation including:

  • Extensive tooth decay
  • Repeated dental procedures on the tooth
  • A crack or chip in the tooth
  • Injury to the tooth that causes the tooth to die

What to expect

During your consultation, we will be sure to discuss the details of your upcoming procedure, as well as answer any questions that you may have.

Step One – Nashville dentist Dr. Brian Devine will apply a local anesthetic to ensure your mouth remains numb throughout the entire procedure. Then a dental dam will be placed over the tooth to isolate and protect it from saliva, as well as keep it clean.

Step Two – Dr. Devine will make an opening in the tooth, just like as if you were getting a cavity repaired, and use small instruments to clean the pulp from the chamber and root canals. This will allow Dr. Devine to shape the space for the filling.

Step Three – Then, the canals of the tooth’s roots will be flushed clean, and filled with gutta-percha, which helps strengthen the roots of the tooth. The next step entails the placement of a temporary filling. Next, Dr. Devine may begin prepping the tooth for a dental crown. The process of the dental crown can be completed on the same day so that when you leave our office, you have a new, healthy tooth.

How do I know if I need a root canal?

If you are receiving routine dental checkups and cleanings, Dr. Devine will be able to detect if an infection begins. However, there are times in which a tooth becomes cracked or old dental work begins to leak, allowing bacteria to reach the nerve chamber of the tooth causing an infection. In these cases, pain may strike at any time, day or night, and can be severe enough that over-the-counter pain relievers provide no relief. If the tooth becomes painful or tender between visits, you will need to take precautions to ensure the healthiest treatment. No matter how nervous a root canal makes you, waiting until it is too late can be the worst mistake.

Symptoms indicating that you may need a root canal include:

  • Sensitivity to hot/cold or sweets
  • Consistent pain
  • Swelling of the face
  • Pain with biting or pressure
  • A bad taste in the mouth
  • Tooth that becomes gray in color (even without pain present)
