Ever feel like your oral hygiene efforts are in vain? Do you brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and even follow through with those twice-yearly checkups and cleanings, yet still seem to get cavities?

What it could come down to is how you breathe. Take a moment to assess how you breathe – is it through your mouth or your nose? If you notice that you consistently breathe through your mouth, then that’s a problem, and here is why.

Mouth breathing results in dry mouth, which inevitably increases the risk of cavities. The purpose of our saliva is to continually rinse away bacteria. However, when the mouth remains dry on a consistent basis, there is a decreased amount of saliva present. Also, breathing air through the mouth disrupts the millions of bacteria, the healthy kind that is, which throws off the pH balance of your mouth, resulting in cavities.

The long-term effects of mouth breathing

That’s not all. If you notice that you breathe through your mouth all of the time, it’s likely that you have an open mouth posture as well. Analyze for a minute how you hold your mouth and tongue when relaxed. Is your mouth open or closed? Are your lips and teeth together or apart? Where is your tongue relaxing – against the upper palate or low in the mouth? These are all important factors when it comes to your oral health. An open mouth posture leads to a host of health problems ranging from an increased risk of sleep apnea, heart disease, and stroke, and even can alter how you look!

How can I stop mouth breathing?

If it were as simple as convincing yourself to breathe through your nose instead, people everywhere would convert to this way of breathing. However, if you are an adult who has spent years breathing through your mouth, your orofacial system including your mouth, lips, and tongue are trained to rest this way. It will take retraining these muscles through a program of myofunctional therapy in order for you to begin breathing nasally, and experienced an improved level or oral health.
