Known as one of the most cutting-edge tooth replacement option available, dental implants can replace your missing teeth and provide you with a stable, secure, and comfortable bite. No other tooth replacement option out there looks and functions more like a natural tooth than a dental implant. Want to have a complete smile again, one that makes you feel confident? Ask your Nashville dentists at Devine Dentistry if you are a candidate for dental implants.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants involve three components. The implant, which is a titanium post, is surgically placed into the jawbone in the place of the missing tooth’s root. On top of that is an abutment, which serves as a connector piece between the implant post and the dental crown. The dental crown, which is the visible portion that you see, is fabricated in size, shape, and color to look indistinguishable from your other natural teeth.
How does getting a dental implant work?
The first step in the process, after your tooth is extracted, is to place the implant. Although this is a surgical procedure, it results in minimal discomfort afterward, and you can even resume your normal activities following your appointment. We will need to allow approximately six months for the surgical site to fully heal and allow the bone to fuse to the implant. This provides a stable foundation for the crown portion of the procedure.
After you have healed completely, we can fabricate a custom-made dental crown that will attach to the abutment on top of the implant. In some cases where aesthetics may be of concern, a temporary crown may be fabricated and worn throughout the healing process. The crown is permanently bonded to the abutment, so you never have to worry about taking it out or that it might slip out of place like a partial denture. In the end, you will have a beautiful new tooth that is indistinguishable from the rest of your smile.
How long do dental implants last?
Dental implants can last a lifetime. With good oral hygiene efforts of brushing and flossing regularly, as well as receiving routine dental exams and cleanings, all will contribute to the longevity of your new restoration. The success rate of the average dental implant is 98%, but you are expected to maintain good oral hygiene if you want this tooth replacement to last.
Am I a candidate for dental implants?
Adults who have missing teeth, and that have adequate levels of jawbone (without the presence of gum disease) are generally good candidates for a dental implant. If additional procedures are necessary, we will let you know during your consultation with your Nashville implant dentist at Devine Dentistry. We can replace one or more missing teeth with dental implants, and even offer an implant procedure that accompanies a full set of dentures that can be either permanent or removable. The options are endless!
