If you are fortunate enough to have dental insurance offered through your employer, it is likely that your insurance policy covers two dental cleanings and checkups each year. Why are these checkups important and why should you take advantage of them? Today on the blog, we will be answering these questions.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends everyone receive routine dental checkups and cleanings. The purpose of these visits to your Nashville dentist is to remove tartar buildup from around your teeth and gums, as well as monitor any changes to your oral health. This way, small problems can be identified early on, instead of waiting until you are in pain or end up paying for expensive dental treatments later.

Isn’t brushing and flossing enough?

As much as we all would like to think so, it’s not. Brushing and flossing indeed are essential to your oral hygiene regimen, but simply are not enough to remove tartar buildup, which occurs naturally to everyone. Tartar is that whitish/yellowish hard buildup between your teeth. Harmful bacteria like to live in that tartar as they feed off sugars from the foods we eat. The bacteria secrete acids that eventually erode tooth enamel leading to cavities and gum disease.

So, while brushing and flossing daily certainly help minimize tartar build up, it cannot remove it entirely. This is why professional dental cleanings are necessary. Plus, while you are at your twice-yearly visit, Dr. Devine will assess your oral health for any changes, and conduct an oral cancer screening.

Why use my dental insurance benefits for cleanings and exams?

Most often, employer based dental insurance plans cover these yearly checkups and cleanings. You are paying a monthly premium for that coverage, so why not use it? How much is your monthly premium, $10, $20, $30 or more? Multiply your monthly premium by 12 months. What does that total? Our guess is more than you want to waste each year. Even if you only end up needing to use your dental insurance for those checkups and cleanings, you are getting your money’s worth!

I don’t have dental insurance, how can I afford to go to the dentist?

The question really should be, how could you afford not to go to the dentist? When we say that we keep a check on your oral health, we really mean that. We can detect small issues such as a tiny cavity in its beginning stages. This saves you money in the long run because fixing a small cavity is much less expensive than waiting to go to the dentist until you start to feel pain. By this point, you could end up with costly repairs such as a root canal, or wind up losing the tooth.

Another important factor about routine checkups is that Dr. Devine also screens each patient for oral cancer, a devastating cancer that typically does not show noticeable symptoms until it reaches later stages, which can be fatal. These screenings can detect oral cancer in the earliest stages when survival rates are known to be much higher.
