Dental crowns are a versatile and effective way to repair damaged teeth. A dental crown covers your original tooth and restores the appearance and functionality of your smile. Traditionally, getting a dental crown meant needing goopy impressions and waiting a couple of weeks for the final restoration. In the meantime, patients wore a temporary crown to protect their tooth. Now, same day dentistry means that Devine Dentistry fabricates your dental crown during a single appointment. Results are exceptional, and it saves you time. But which option is best? Today on the blog, our cosmetic dentists in Nashville are providing information to help you decide if you should get a same day crown or a traditional crown.
What is CEREC?
CEREC, or Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, was the first system developed for the dental industry that helped dentists offer Same Day Crowns with an approximate level of quality as a traditional crown. By using computer-aided design software (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing software (CAM) combined with 3D imaging, your dental crown dentist in Green Hills can now mill their own crowns in their office. With special training, your dentist can measure, design, and produce a custom crown using a milling machine during the same appointment. In addition to crowns, the new technology can produce inlays, onlays, dental bridges, and porcelain veneers.
How does it work?
Traditional crowns require your Belle Meade dentist to reduce the size of the tooth that needs the crown and then take an impression of your teeth that will be used to design your crown. The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory where your new crown will be produced within a few days or weeks. Once it returns from the lab, your dentist will cement it to the tooth while making the proper adjustments to fit the size and shape of your natural teeth.
Same Day Crowns still require your dentist to reduce the size of your tooth, but without taking impressions as a 3D dental scan is made instead. Your dentist will help you decide which shade best matches your natural tooth color so the crown should naturally blend in with your smile. Using the software to design your crown, the on-site milling machine will cut the crown out of a ceramic or porcelain block using diamond-tipped burs. Once complete, your dentist will try it on to ensure a proper fit prior to cementing the crown to your tooth. Finally, adjustments will be made as needed.
What are the benefits of CEREC?
The most obvious benefit of CEREC dental crowns is the ability to have the procedure completed the same day at your Nashville dental office. This saves you time from having to make a second trip to the dentist after waiting on a laboratory to fabricate your crown.
CEREC’s bonding technique could allow severely damaged teeth that may not be suitable for traditional crowns to receive treatment. The process requires less tooth enamel to be removed, reducing the risk for heightened sensitivity and other complications.
Just like traditional crowns, CEREC ceramic and porcelain crowns are durable and natural-looking. Although CEREC dental crowns are not as strong as traditional crowns, they do provide an effective metal-free option to restore your smile.
