When a dental appointment approaches on your calendar, do you get nervous in the days or hours leading up to it? If so, you are not alone. Maybe you have had a bad experience at the dentist in the past, or maybe you are worried that it will hurt. Perhaps you have difficulty sitting still in the dental chair during your appointment.

Do any of these apply to you? If so, rest easy. Dentistry has come a long way in the past several decades, and dentists working at the forefront of the field now offer sedation to help keep even extremely nervous and fearful patients calm so they can receive the professional oral care they need. If you are interested in learning more about sedation, it is important to know that there are different methods of sedation, some of which are stronger than others. Your sedation dentists in Nashville at Devine Dentistry want to educate you to the different levels of dental sedation.

Nitrous oxide is a longstanding method of sedation in dentistry-Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide has been used to sedate patients in dentistry for decades. The gas is mixed with oxygen and administered in a mask that fits over your nose and rests gently on your face. Under the effects of nitrous oxide, you may feel a slight feeling of euphoria, as any feelings of anxiety and fear fade away. You will have a diminished awareness of your surroundings, but also be able to carry on conversations with your dentist and any other people around you. After the dental work has been completed, the flow of nitrous oxide is cut off and replaced with pure oxygen, bringing you out of the effects of sedation in a matter of a few minutes.

If you are pregnant or allergic to laughing gas, you are not a candidate for nitrous oxide. Children can undergo sedation via nitrous oxide but are likely to feel nauseated during or after the procedure; we ask parents to limit the amount of food their children eat prior to an appointment where nitrous oxide will be used.

IV sedation is the most powerful level of sedation available in Nashville at Devine Dentistry. This method of sedation is administered by injection. Since it is injected straight into the bloodstream, this sedation is extremely fast-acting, and also able to be adjusted to different levels during the procedure. Patients under the effects of IV sedation feel totally relaxed and stress-free, while still able to communicate with others around you. Moreover, they usually have no memory of the procedure that is performed.

Because IV sedation is stronger, patients who will have a procedure involving this method of sedation need to arrange travel to and from their appointment and refrain from eating or drinking anything for at least eight hours prior to the appointment. Be sure not to drink alcohol for a minimum of 24 hours before an appointment that involves IV sedation.
