Does your stomach feel like it is in knots just thinking about going to the dentist? If this sounds familiar, you are probably dealing with dental anxiety. Many patients experience feelings of fear or anxiety when visiting the dentist. Some are even so extreme that they avoid going entirely unless they are in severe pain, which by the way, is the worst idea ever! Sedation dentistry in Nashville at Devine Dentistry can help you feel calm and relaxed while receiving routine dental care or extensive procedures.

Devine Dentistry is here to share with you what sedation dentistry is, and how it may work for you.

Sedation dentistry comes in different forms be it an oral sedative, a pill that you take before your appointment, or nitrous oxide, which is commonly known as laughing gas. Each sedation method has slightly different effects both during and after use. Here is a look at the two options.

When you are prescribed an oral sedative, you simply take your dose about 30 minutes before your appointment to give the medication time to take effect. With that being said, you will need to plan to have someone that you trust to drive you to and from your appointment. This trusted individual will also need to be available to wait in the waiting room throughout your procedure.

Oral Sedatives

Oral sedatives will not put you out completely, but you will reach a deep state of relaxation as if you have no care in the world while being able to still communicate with your dental care team. You will feel like Julie Andrews from The Sound of Music as she goes running and twirling through the field singing the infamous song from the movie, except you will not be singing and twirling! The sedative will likely leave you feeling drowsy. Therefore, it is best just to go home and rest for a few hours or the remainder of the day.

Laughing Gas

Nitrous oxide is quite different. It is a colorless and odorless gas that is inhaled through a mask that is worn over your nose during your appointment. It takes effect rather quickly, also making you feel relaxed, and leaving you awake and able to communicate with the dentist. One of the biggest reasons why people prefer nitrous oxide is that they not only get to experience a carefree dental appointment, but the effects wear off right after the flow of gas stops. This means that you do not have to have a driver and that you can return to your normal activities following your appointment.

Not sure which method is right for you? Just ask us during a consultation with your Nashville dentist at Devine Dentistry. Certain pre-existing conditions may preclude you from being a candidate for either method, but in general, patients who are healthy, not pregnant, and who truly do need something to take the edge off, are good candidates for sedation dentistry or nitrous oxide.
