Visiting your Nashville dentist can be inconvenient, especially if you juggle a hectic schedule. That cleaning appointment always seems to creep up, because let’s be honest, you made the appointment six months ago, right? According to a publication by the American Dental Association, only about 4 out of every 10 adults floss their teeth once a day, and about 20 percent of adults never floss. That equates to more than 65 million people that miss cleaning nearly 30% of their teeth! Just imagine if you only cleaned roughly two-thirds of your body every time you showered. While we would never think to do that, why do we treat our mouths any different?
Brushing alone will not remove all of the plaque that is caked on or between their teeth. As this plaque is left in the mouth, it eventually hardens and becomes tartar. Even patients that are the pinnacle of oral hygiene still develop tartar buildup, which can only be removed by professional dental cleanings. When the dental hygienist scrapes your teeth, he or she is removing that hard, calculus buildup that otherwise would lead to gum disease or cavities.

While you may not be too worried about your teeth, although we think that you should, it is important to understand that your oral health is connected to your overall health. In other words, ignoring your oral health can lead to an increased risk of certain diseases and life-threatening ailments such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, pre-term birth, low birth weight in babies, and even Alzheimer’s disease.
